Or, the drama of a pre-schooler!
What happened?
Today he did not want to go to school. He cried and wanted to stay at home.
We were in a panic, in a hurry to go to work. Classic morning family chaos, where, as time passes, anxiety increases, and patience drops below zero.
I was still panicking… but while he was crying, I closed my eyes and took 3 deep breaths. And then…
I gave him a hug, a big warm hug.
“Everything is OK,” I told him. “You will just go, have fun, play, and then I will come back to you”. The hug became firmer, more reassuring.
His mood changed.
He then went to school, happy and reassured.
Thoughts
I left for work and while commuting I was thinking, “That parents usually forget how powerful the presence or absence of a parent is for a child”. The influence is immense, especially in these early stages of their life.
I still think about it, here and there. The power of a hug, the power of presence. The power of a parent. So powerful and yet so simple. We all need a hug.
